In the early 1900s, national currencies were typically backed by commodities; that is no longer true. The United States dollar, for example, was divorced from the gold standard in the early 1930s, becoming a “fiat” currency whose value is backed solely by the word of the government.

Then, as computers evolved, electronic payments became ubiquitous. Most recently, the huge run into Crypto Currencies. However, the same issues are unfolding. It's just a “fiat” crypto currency whose value is backed solely by the word of the creator.
