Question of the Week

Question: "David, will the recent issuance of negative interest-bearing bonds by some European banks have a stimulating effect on people's desire to hold (or buy more) gold and silver?"

Answer: This is a great question. In several countries as of late - including Switzerland (!) we are starting to see 5 and 10 year bonds being issued (and actually bought by investors) bearing negative interest rates - where the bond holder pays the bank for the privilege!

Historically, in a low interest rate environment, money is attracted to the precious metals for the possibility of price appreciation - since the interest rates are low enough that they may not pay for the potential inflation risk of holding them.

So yes, these negative interest bonds (also being pushed by some banks for their savings account holders) are likely over time to increase people's interest in holding something that at least they don't have to pay someone else for the privilege of keeping! I'd say that his kind of puts to rest the old saw that you don't want to hold gold "because it doesn't pay any interest"!
